Spreyton Shop is owned and managed by the community in Spreyton. It is run mainly by volunteers with the assistance of a part time manager and the support of more than 200 local shareholders.
The shop is next to the Village Hall and so is conveniently located next to the playing fields, tennis court, cricket pitch and children's play area with superb parking. The shop has an outside seating area where you can enjoy outstanding views over Dartmoor.
The shop stocks a wide range of reasonably-priced everyday essentials, food, toiletries, cleaning materials, newspapers, tobacco and lots of Devon produce - including many items made very locally that you just can't buy anywhere else.
You'll find fresh bread, milk and cakes daily, vegetables, beef, chicken and eggs from local farmers and cheese from dairies in Devon and Cornwall, as well as locally produced jams and chutneys. There is also an excellent selection of wines and local ales.
And if you are visiting Spreyton you can buy a souvenir tea towel or bag and take home some foodie gift items.
The Post Office operates in the shop on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons from 10am-12 noon, and the Fish Van brings fresh fish on a Tuesday afternoon from 2.45pm-3.30pm. There is also a dry cleaning service; garments dropped off by Wednesday will be ready for collection the following Wednesday.
For any orders you may wish to place please telephone 01647 231 711 as this will ensure that your order will be ready for your collection. Alternatively you can email the shop - email@example.com.
Spreyton Village Shop is a community-owned shop manned primarily by volunteers and any surplus (profit) made by the shop will go back into the community. It is one of over 250 community-owned shops across the country, supported by the Plunkett Foundation whose aim is to "improve rural livelihoods through cooperative and social enterprise".The shop now has over 200 shareholders and we are fortunate to have funding for. a part-time manager to run our everyday retail operations.
With the exception of our part-time Manager, the shop is run entirely by volunteers and we always welcome more. It's a great place to meet people and build friendships. And without the volunteers there would be no shop!!
Some volunteers assist us greatly by opening the shop first thing in the morning: sorting the newspapers, early deliveries and start some of the opening checks, they have done their bit and still have a full day ahead of them. Others are involved behind the scenes with bookkeeping or marketing.
Some volunteers always work the same slot every week or fortnightly because that works for them, others fill in the rota when they see a gap to fit in with children, parents and part-time jobs.
However you wish to volunteer we will work to make it possible for you to be part of our community shop. We have a really good training programme and you will be paired with an experienced volunteer until you feel comfortable, with full training and support given.
If you are interested in becoming a shop volunteer please get in touch with Bela Snook, the manager or chat to a volunteer next time you are in the shop.
